2010 WIC Week

After receiving proclamations from the Bexar County Commissioners, Mayor Julian Castro, and Governor Rick Perry declaring March 7-13, 2010 WIC (Women in Construction)Week, our NAWIC Chapter hosted a number of events to celebrate the special occasion. We excitedly offered “something for everyone” – so no matter what your reason for joining NAWIC was, be it networking, education, friendships, or community service, we celebrated WICWeek with a coordinating event!

Sunday, March 7 our chapter met at the Palladium theater to see the new “Alice inWonderland” movie on the IMAX theater in 3D! Since our upcoming annual forum event this year has a “Wonderland” theme, we felt this was the perfect movie choice to get us ready! After the movie, we had a late lunch at Maggiano's restaurant and enjoyed wonderful fellowship and discussed our various jobsites, and upcoming work.

Tuesday, March 9 we gathered on the jobsite of Orion Military Construction Services at Ft. Sam to tour the design and construction of their buildings. This was a wonderful educational opportunity, for our tradeswomen as well as our office managers and company owners. After the tour, lunch was provided courtesy of Orion Construction Services, Inc.

Thursday, March 11, we met up after work at Water to Wine to socialize and kick back with our fellow members. This was a wonderful opportunity to get to know the ladies in the chapter and learn a little more about them and what their companies do within construction.

Finally, we ended WICWeek with a FUN game night on Friday, March 12 . Members were encouraged to bring a guest, as they would receive more chances to win prizes. We had 35 members and 7 guests attend this event. Retro game shows, such as “Let's Make a Deal” and “Match Game” were changed to give them a fun “NAWIC twist”. Tickets were awarded throughout the night and 10 fabulous raffle prizes were given away at the end of the evening.

Overall, our WICWeek was a raging success, and we had three new members sign up with more applications pending!
