National Association of Women in Construction
San AntonioChapter #11
General Business Meeting
Secretary’s Report
May 5, 2010
Call to Order
President Jennifer Swinney called the May 5, 2010 meeting of the San Antonio Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction to order at 6:05 pm at the Petroleum Club.
Inspiration:
Belinda Graham shared an inspiration on Passion.
Introductions of members and guests took place.
President Jennifer Swinney announced the following:
At IAN last month, we presented numerous awards and recognitions, unfortunately some members were unable to attend.
SPONSORSHIPS:
Our chapter can only set big goals, and achieve big visions with the support of company sponsors. Our success is a direct result of the donations of those companies that believe in what our organization is about, and choose to financially invest and support us in promoting educational opportunities and giving back to the community.
Brian Koslow said, “Surround yourself with people who believe in you.”
President Jennifer Swinney presented Leslye Hernandez with an appreciation plaque on behalf of Cram Roofing.
SAFETY & HEALTH: This year the National Safety & Health Committee created a Regional Contest for companies who promote safety awareness. There were 8 applicants from our Region, 5 of those being from San Antonio, and I’m proud to say that the winner was San Antonio company, Martin Marietta Materials, submitted by Rhonda Steves-Jung.
MEMBERSHIP: In the past 19 months, our chapter has grown from 36 members to an incredible 101 members, keeping us in competition with Cleveland Ohio as the largest chapter in the Nation. Our chapter achieved 88% retention this year, losing only 10 members to the declining economy. In addition, with 28 new members so far this year, we
are the chapter with the largest number of new members in the Nation! President Jennifer Swinneypresented certificates to those members who have recruited a new member this year, but were unable to attend IAN.
NEF: As you know education is extremely important to NAWIC, and our San Antonio chapter has strived to encourage personal education amongst our members. President Jennifer Swinney handed out the “shining star” medal to those members who stepped out of their comfort zone and attempted one of the NEF exams this year – pass or fail, you are successful because you tried!

Program – Guest Speaker:
Reynaldo Garcia – Engineering Safety Consultants
Rey Garcia has been a Safety Consultants with ESC for 7 years. He began his safety experience 30 years ago when he agreed to focus on safety at the refinery he worked at in Corpus Christi. During his time at ESC he was an essential team member for the Toyota Manufacturing Plant where he was the supervisor for the field activities. When not advising about fall protection and hard hat usage, Mr. Garcia enjoys riding horses and playing golf – especially in the NAWIC tournaments. We lovingly refer to him as “Smiley Ray” (you’ll soon see why) and for goodness sakes don’t get him started on the story about the movie he was in….

The Chapter Board of Directors voted and the National By Laws Chairwoman approved our request to amend our Chapter Standing Rules. The change is to increase the number of Directors to ten. Currently we allow for six Directors.
Our rationale is that with a membership of 100 and growing our board feels that our members need more representation on the board. Having ten Directors will allow for approximately one director per ten members.
Vote was taken and approved.
