National Association of Women in Construction
San Antonio Chapter #11
NAWIC BLOCK KIDS EVENT 2009

WHAT IS THE BLOCK KIDS PROGRAM?
The Block-Kids Building Program is a national building program competition that is sponsored on the local level by NAWIC chapters and other organizations. The award-winning program introduces children to the construction industry in an effort to create an awareness of and to promote an interest in future careers in one of the many facets of the industry. The program is open to all elementary school children in grades 1-6. The competition involves the construction of various structures with interlocking blocks and three of the following additional items: A small rock, string, foil and poster board. Local winners advance to Regional Competition and one semi-finalist from each region is entered in the National Program competions. National prizes are awarded to the top three projects.

SAN ANTONIO CHAPTER BLOCK KIDS EVENT 2009

A total of 28 5th grade students participated, more girls then boys.  The kids designed everything from suspension bridges, rock museum, Greek gods & goddesses, to the Eifel Tower, a high tech house, Twin Towers with power lines & lights, solar day care center, church, hospital, Alamodome & of course, the AT&T Center. One student designed hers out on paper before even beginning (a future architect, perhaps?).  A lot of imagination went into their projects and it was really hard to decide which ones would win.

1st place winner was The Gate of “Defence” (his spelling) and he was shocked and thrilled to win.  We also gave out McDonald's gift cards to all participants and additional gift cards were given for best use of foil, rock and string.

They all had a great time and the school has already asked us to come again next year and have the ENTIRE 5th grade participate!
